Where is Manuk Island Located?

Manuk Island is a remote, uninhabited volcanic island in the Banda Sea, Indonesia, 100 miles off the Banda Islands. Due to its isolated location, this island is accessible primarily via liveaboard dive trips.

What Makes Manuk Island a Unique Diving Destination?

Pristine Underwater Landscapes

While Manuk Island may not yet be as popular as other iconic dive destinations in Indonesia, such as Raja Ampat or Komodo Island, it remains a hidden treasure full of natural charm and wonder. Its remote location means the island’s marine ecosystem remains pristine and relatively untouched.

Additionally, the island also possesses unique underwater landscapes, with active geothermal vents rising from the depths amid the coral reefs. The combination of volcanic activity and a clean ecosystem is what nurtures the abundant marine life in the area.

Abundant Sea Snake Population

Another thing that makes Manuk Island so unique is its sea snake population. As you dive here, you can expect to encounter numerous banded sea kraits gliding gracefully through the reefs, as well as interact with other interesting marine life. These sea snakes are known for their curiosity and may approach divers closely.

Though venomous, these sea snakes are harmless towards humans. Their calm nature allows for safe, close-up encounters, making Manuk Island one of the few places where you can dive closely with these fascinating creatures in the wild.

Marine Life in Manuk Island

1. Sea Snakes

Nicknamed “Snake Island,” the sea snakes are undoubtedly one of Manuk Island’s biggest attractions. In fact, this unique location is one of the few places in the world where divers can see such a large congregation of sea snakes in their natural habitat. Given their abundance, it’s important to maintain good buoyancy and control your movements to avoid accidentally kicking one of them.

2. Trevally

Known for their speed and agility, schools of trevally are often seen along the reefs hunting for smaller prey. However, in Manuk Island, these fish have a unique interaction with the sea snakes. Together, they team up to hunt, with the snakes following the trevallies to corner smaller prey in the reef, while the trevallies scare the prey into the cracks where the snakes can catch them. This cooperative behavior, though not common elsewhere, showcases a fascinating example of interspecies collaboration in the wild.

3. Barracuda

Manuk Island also has a thriving barracuda population, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities encountering them patrolling the water, darting through the coral reefs to find prey. Their streamlined bodies and sharp teeth make them formidable hunters, but the barracuda in the region are typically already accustomed to divers and tend to show a curious behaviour.

4. Sharks

Though the island is more popular for its snakes, divers are sometimes fortunate enough to encounter sharks during their underwater explorations. Hammerhead sharks occasionally pass through Manuk Island, or can sometimes be spotted in deeper channels and along the outer reef slopes. Reef sharks, like the blacktip and whitetip, are also occasionally sighted, patrolling shallower waters.

Best Time to Dive in Manuk Island

The best time to dive in Manuk Island typically ranges from October to April. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, with calm seas and great visibility. The water temperature typically ranges from 27-30° Celsius.

As for diving conditions, the waters around Manuk Island are typically calm with occasional mild currents. However, some areas may have stronger currents, so be sure to follow your diving guide’s instructions.

Always maintain a safe distance from the sea creatures and avoid disturbing the coral reefs. Remember, even though sea snakes and other wildlife like sharks may seem curious, they are still wild animals, so keeping interactions to a minimum is best for both their well-being and your safety.

4. Conduct a Thorough Equipment Check
