Lithium Battery Safety Policy

Why Are Lithium Batteries a Concern?

Rechargeable lithium batteries are now part of almost every dive trip, powering cameras, strobes, torches, laptops, tablets, phones, drones and power banks.

While generally safe when used correctly, damaged, defective or improperly charged batteries can pose a fire risk. Industry findings show that most battery-related incidents occur during charging, discharging or following physical damage.

Why Does Solitude Have These Procedures?

Many guests are familiar with airline lithium battery regulations, including Watt-hour (Wh) limits for devices carried in passenger cabins. However, airline limits are primarily designed to regulate what passengers may transport during a flight, rather than eliminate the possibility of a battery-related incident altogether.

At Solitude, our approach is based not only on battery size or stated capacity, but also on the operational realities of remote marine environments. A battery considered acceptable for airline transport may still present a risk if damaged, poorly manufactured, improperly stored or left charging unattended for extended periods.

Liveaboard Charging Procedures

To help reduce avoidable risks on board our vessels:

  • Rechargeable lithium batteries must only be charged within designated charging areas such as camera rooms or charging stations
  • Guests are requested to inform the crew of any power banks brought on board
  • Power banks are not permitted for general use around the vessel and will instead be stored within battery safety containers provided by the crew
  • Guests may be asked not to use batteries, chargers or charging devices that appear damaged, modified, swollen, unmarked or of questionable quality
  • Where practical, limited alternative batteries may be available on board for temporary use or rental

These procedures allow charging activity to be better monitored while additional safety measures remain in place.

Resort Charging Procedures

At our resorts, guests are encouraged to use designated charging areas wherever possible, including camera rooms and charging stations.

Guests may also be asked not to use batteries or charging devices that appear damaged, modified, swollen, unmarked or of questionable quality.

Our Approach

These procedures are not intended to inconvenience guests, but to reduce avoidable risks wherever reasonably possible. While no policy can eliminate risk entirely, responsible battery management significantly improves safety for guests, crew, staff and vessels alike.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a safer environment for everyone.
