Decorator Crab Facts: Underwater Master of Camouflage

The decorator crabs, which are a part of the Majoidea family, are known as the masters of disguise in the underwater world. The Majoidea family itself includes spider crabs, which are known for their long legs and clever survival tactics.

Spider decorator crabs have the remarkable ability to camouflage by doing something truly unique. Instead of changing colors like a squid or chameleon would do, these crabs decorate their shells with pieces of seaweed, sponges, anemones, and other materials from their habitat. These objects would later help them hide from predators by blending perfectly into their environment.

Because of this unique behavior, these sea animals are sought after by divers and underwater photographers. Their camouflage makes it a challenge to find them, but when you do find them, you’ll definitely feel rewarded!

Decorator Crabs Photography Tips

1. Look for Patterns and Textures

Since these crabs are able to camouflage against seaweed, sponges, soft corals, and other debris, you need to know how to spot them. Train your eyes to spot unusual textures or movements that might reveal their hiding spots.

2. Use a Macro Lens

Because of their small size, you’re going to need a macro lens if you want to capture the crabs along with their unique and intricate details. Make sure to focus on their unique decorations and how they blend with their environment.

3. Be Sure to Bring the Right Lighting

You’ll also want to bring the right and proper lighting when you dive. Use a strobe light or focus light to highlight the crabs’ features, textures, and colors while avoiding harsh shadows. Don’t hesitate to play with the angles too to enhance their three-dimensional appearance.

4. Be Patient and Gentle

Decorator crabs are shy creatures and they may retreat if startled. Remember to approach them slowly, don’t make any sudden moves, and allow them to settle into their natural behavior. Your patience will result in more natural and engaging shots.
