Diving with Thresher Sharks at Kimud Shoal

Diving with thresher sharks in the Philippines is a bucket-list experience for many scuba enthusiasts. These majestic creatures, known for their elongated tail fins and graceful movements, offer a unique underwater spectacle. Imagine these sleek silhouettes gliding silently through the water, tails arcing gracefully as they approach, creating an almost surreal encounter that captivates every diver’s heart.

The Kimud Shoal Adventure

Embarking on the transition trip from Tubbataha to Cebu on Solitude One, we ventured to Kimud Shoal, near Malapascua Island. Here, at just 16 meters, we encountered up to four juvenile thresher sharks swirling around us. Their big, wide doll eyes added to their mysterious allure, and their curious nature brought them closer with each pass.

On the northern part of the Shoal, two larger, mature threshers patrolled at around 17 meters. Their presence was commanding, though less interactive, exuding wisdom and experience.

Diving at Kimud Shoal offers two approaches: sit and wait for the thresher sharks to appear or fin around to explore more marine life. Opting for the latter, we saw cuttlefish, reef octopus, blacktip sharks, schools of barracuda, jacks, fusiliers, and even an eagle ray.

The Shoal’s top is adorned with hydroids and soft corals, while its slopes feature black coral trees, creating a vibrant underwater canvas.

Thresher Shark Facts

Thresher sharks (*Alopias*) are recognisable by their long, whip-like tails, used to stun prey. Preferring deep waters, they often surface at dawn and dusk. They are known for breaching, where they leap out of the water, possibly for communication, parasite removal, or hunting.

Behaviour and Cleaning Stations

Thresher sharks frequent cleaning stations on underwater plateaus or seamounts. Here, cleaner fish remove parasites and dead skin, maintaining the sharks’ health. This mutualistic relationship benefits both parties.
