Patrick Neumann

A bit about Patrick
Patrick, a 49-year-old professional underwater photographer from Germany, began diving at seven and has since completed over 5000 dives. With 16 years of experience in the dive industry as an instructor and cruise director, he now manages Solitude Lembeh Resort in the renowned Lembeh Strait. Patrick’s work has been featured in numerous magazines and honored in prestigious competitions like the World Shootout and UPY. He serves as an Ambassador for Nauticam & Minigear Europe.
Five tips from Patrick
Here are Patrick’s Tips for choosing a quality underwater photography courses:
- Primarily, consider the workshop leader’s identity. It’s advisable to avoid PADI digital underwater photographer instructors, as they typically cover only the fundamental aspects. Instead, opt for a globally recognized professional underwater photographer.
- Review the portfolio of the workshop leader and select one whose style resonates with you.
- Establish contact with the workshop leader to gauge compatibility. Not every instructor may align with every student, and a lack of rapport can hinder the learning process.
- Choose the destination wisely based on the workshop’s focus. For macro workshops, destinations like Lembeh or Anilao are preferable over Palau, the Maldives, or the Red Sea. Similarly, for wide-angle workshops, avoid macro-centric areas. Selecting the appropriate destination is crucial for maximizing the workshop’s benefits.
- The choice of camera is relatively less significant. Modern point-and-shoot cameras can produce remarkable images. Ultimately, the photographer’s skills and understanding of lighting play a more crucial role than the type of camera being used.
