Workshop Tips

We’ve consulted two legendary underwater photography experts to gather insights on the key factors they prioritise when selecting a top-tier workshop.

Here are their Top 5 Tips;

Lilian Koh

A bit about Lilian

Lilian Koh is a passionate underwater photographer and marine enthusiast, dedicated to capturing the beauty of the ocean’s depths. With a keen eye for detail and a love for marine life, she strives to convey the wonder of the underwater world through her captivating images.

When it comes to selecting a quality UW Photography workshop, here are Lilian’s five essential tips to consider:

1. Instructor’s Experience: It’s crucial to choose workshops led by instructors who have extensive experience in both underwater photography and teaching. Look for certifications, awards, and testimonials from past participants to ensure the instructor can effectively guide participants of all skill levels.

2. Comprehensive Curriculum: Opt for workshops that offer a well-designed curriculum covering technical aspects like camera settings, composition techniques, and post-processing. A balanced approach ensures participants gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience.

3. Group Size and Personalised Attention: Pay attention to the participant-to-instructor ratio. Smaller groups often allow for more individualised instruction and personalised feedback. This ensures that each participant receives the necessary attention and guidance to improve their skills.

4. Location and Dive Conditions: Consider workshops held in renowned underwater photography destinations known for their diverse marine life, clear waters, and suitable diving conditions. Such locations provide ample opportunities for participants to practise their skills and capture stunning underwater images.

5. Embrace Creativity and Experimentation: Look for workshops that encourage participants to explore different techniques and approaches, even if they go against conventional wisdom. A workshop environment that fosters creativity and experimentation can lead to unexpected breakthroughs and personal growth in underwater photography.

Patrick Neumann

A bit about Patrick

Patrick, a 49-year-old professional underwater photographer from Germany, began diving at seven and has since completed over 5000 dives. With 16 years of experience in the dive industry as an instructor and cruise director, he now manages Solitude Lembeh Resort in the renowned Lembeh Strait. Patrick’s work has been featured in numerous magazines and honoured in prestigious competitions like the World Shootout and UPY. He serves as an Ambassador for Nauticam & Minigear Europe.

Here are Patrick’s Tips in choosing a quality underwater photography workshop:

1. Primarily, consider the workshop leader’s identity. It’s advisable to avoid PADI digital underwater photographer instructors, as they typically cover only the fundamental aspects. Instead, opt for a globally recognised professional underwater photographer.

2. Review the portfolio of the workshop leader and select one whose style resonates with you.

3. Establish contact with the workshop leader to gauge compatibility. Not every instructor may align with every student, and a lack of rapport can hinder the learning process.

4. Regarding the destination, choose wisely based on the workshop’s focus. For macro workshops, destinations like Lembeh or Anilao are preferable over Palau, the Maldives, or the Red Sea. Similarly, for wide-angle workshops, avoid macro-centric areas. Selecting the appropriate destination is crucial for maximising the workshop’s benefits.

5. The choice of camera is relatively less significant. Modern point-and-shoot cameras can produce remarkable images. Ultimately, the photographer’s skills and understanding of lighting play a more crucial role than the type of camera being used.
